Joke turns deadly after friends throw drunk man into Rizal pool

SAN PEDRO CITY— A “joke” led to the death of a drunk 37-year-old man in Rodriguez, Rizal after his friends threw him into a swimming pool where he drowned.

Supt. Pablito Naganag, Rodriguez police chief, said Jonathan Cunanan died after doctors failed to revive him at around 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Police said Cunanan had been drinking with his friends at the Villa Elena resort in Barangay San Jose on Sunday afternoon.

Solano Sordilla, 27, and another male friend whose identity the police were still verifying, reportedly suddenly threw Cunanan into the pool for fun.

“They were all drunk,” Naganag said, referring to Cunanan and the suspects. The others in the group tried to rescue the victim but he was already unconscious when brought to the hospital.

Naganag said the incident was caught on a security camera of the resort.

Police said they would file a case of homicide against suspect Sordilla. The other suspect had escaped and being tracked down by authorities. /vvp
