Trump-Kim summit ‘augurs well’ for regional peace, stability — Palace

MALACANANG on Wednesday said the Philippine government welcomed the “landmark” summit between United States (US) President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, saying it “augers well” for peace and stability in region.

In a statement, Palace spokesman Harry Roque said the Philippines was “ready to lend its support” to attain the goals of the historic dialogue.

“We welcome the landmark summit between US President Donald Trump and DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore. This development, which has underscored in the strongest terms the value of diplomacy and peaceful dialogue, augurs well for the peace, security and stability in the region and the world,” Roque said.

“History has indeed been written. At the same time, this is but the beginning of a process. The Philippines is ready and willing to lend its support toward bringing it to fruition,” he added.

Trump and Kim met in Singapore on Tuesday, when the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea committed to work to completely denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, among other agreements.

The two leaders also signed a “very comprehensive” document after their summit in Singapore.

After the talks, the US president said that the process of denuclearization on the Korean peninsula would begin “very soon” and the North Korean leader promised to leave the past behind. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
