1 killed, 7 hurt in Davao del Norte motorcycle race

DAVAO CITY — One person died and seven others were injured in an accident during a motorcycle race in Carmen town, Davao del Norte on Saturday, police on Sunday said.

Chief Insp. Milgrace Driz, Southern Mindanao police spokesperson, identified the fatality as Tirso Casuga, 26.

Driz said the accident happened as Casuga and scores of others were watching a motocross competition at the Carmen National High School grounds at Purok (Community) 6, Barangay (Village) Ising at around 3:30 p.m.

During the competition, the motorbike driven by 18-year old Kent Jerecho Dimaano went out of control as it made a turn, causing it to swerve and plow into the crowd, hitting the victims, Driz said.

Aside from Dimaano, also hurt were Gretchen Lagat, 28; Efren Abella Jr., 27; Christian Taba, 15; Jazhin Generoso, 13; Jeric Tranquilan, 18; and Christian Corton, 15.

The injured are undergoing treatment at a local hospital asĀ investigation into the accident was underway, the police spokespersonĀ said. /je
