KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao defeated Lucas Matthysse via technical knockout (TKO) and wrested the World Boxing Association (WBA) crown from the big punching Argentine here on Sunday.

With the win, Pacquiao, 39, also ended a nine-year knockout drought, as he showed flashes of his old form in knocking down his opponent three times in front of Filipino fans at the Axiata Arena that included President Rodrigo Duterte and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad. Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight on the third knockdown with 2:43 left in the seventh round.

Duterte is in Malaysia on a state visit and took the opportunity to watch Pacquiao.

Pacquiao now improves to 60-7-2 win-loss-draw record with 39 knockouts.

Matthysse dropped to 39-5 record with 36 knockouts.
