Low pressure area enters PH, now tropical depression ‘Luis’

THE low pressure area (LPA) north of Luzon entered Philippine territory on Thursday and intensified into a tropical depression to be called “Luis.”

According to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the center of Luis was located 290 kilometers (km) north- northwest of Basco, Batanes as of 11 a.m.

It is not expected to directly affect the country but will trigger the southwest monsoon or “habagat” which will bring scattered moderate to heavy rains in La Union, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Batanes and Babuyan Islands and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) starting Friday.

Residents in these areas, especially those living in low-lying and in mountainous areas, are advised to take appropriate actions against possible flooding and landslides and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices, Pagasa said. GLEE JALEA
