SIX out of 10 Filipinos believe that the US will defend the Philippines in case of an invasion by another country, a survey by Social Weather Stations (SWS) said.

The survey, taken ahead of the 67th year of the Mutual Defense Treaty (MDT) between the US and the Philippines in August 2018, showed that 61 percent of the 1,200 respondents surveyed nationwide answered in the affirmative while 9 percent said otherwise.

The remaining 30 percent were undecided.

Majority of the 61 percent were from Balance Luzon (70 percent), followed by Metro Manila (64 percent), Visayas (41 percent) and Mindanao (31 percent).

51 percent of the respondents who believe that the US will defend the Philippines were from class ABC, followed by class D at 49 percent, and class E at 34 percent.

The survey also said that 47 percent of Filipinos were aware of the MDT, which called for US support in the case of an external attack on the Philippines.

Of those who were aware, 80 percent believed the US would defend the country while 45 percent expressed the same after being made aware of the treaty only during the survey.

The survey, using face-to-face interviews on respondents aged 18 years old and above, was from June 27 to 30, but was released on Wednesday.

It had sampling error margins of ±3 percent  for national percentages, and ±6 percent each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. RALPH EDWIN U. VILLANUEVA
