UNTIL the campaign period starts in February, everything is fair game insofar as premature campaigning is concerned, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), a spokesman for the poll body said on Wednesday.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez issued the clarification on Wednesday, saying that even if a candidate would print the words “vote for” in his or her posters or tarpaulins and even on television and radio paid advertisements, “it is not a violation.”

“There is no limit on election propaganda, whether on television, cable television, radio, newspaper, the Internet or any other medium, by all parties and candidates seeking national and local elective positions,” he said.

However, Jimenez stressed that it would be a different ballgame at the start of the campaign season on February 12 for national positions and March 29 for local candidates.

“Until the campaign period has officially started, there is nothing that the Comelec can do on premature campaigning,” he said. WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL
