CHR calls for greater protection for human rights

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) called on the government to intensify its efforts to protect human rights as another broadcaster was killed in Negros Oriental.
The Commission made the call as it condemned the killing of Gabriel Alboro, alias Kumander Agila, a radio block timer of dyJL in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental.
Alboro was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen in Sitio Magtalisay, Barangay Población, La Libertad, Negros Oriental, at about 3 a.m. on Friday.

“The Commission condemns all forms of killings that blatantly disregards the primacy of the right to life of every person, including priests, lawyers, judges, law enforcement officers, government officials, and ordinary citizens who have been victimized by such injustice,” CHR said in a statement on Sunday.
“We equally call on the government to further intensify its efforts in guarding the rights of all, especially at this time of rampant human rights violation around,” it added.
The Commission noted that “attacks through riding in tandem and in open, public areas continue to be carried out by a number of perpetrators, which puts at risk the safety and rights of all those in the area of incident.”
Alboro was the third broadcaster killed in Negros Island since 2017, after radio anchorman Edmond Sestoso in Dumaguete City and Julius Broce Barellano, a volunteer radio reporter in San Carlos City, Negros Oriental. /cbb
