MANILA, Philippines — Former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas has changed his stand on the legalization of divorce in the Philippines.
Roxas, in an interview with ANC’s program “Headstart” on Tuesday, said he was for divorce.
“Look, there’s the law of the church and then there’s the law for man. And for me, I believe if a couple cannot really make it work anymore, for the sake of the kids, for the sake of the two individuals, give them a chance to start over,” he said when asked about his stance on divorce.
When he ran for president in 2016, Roxas opposed the legalization of divorce.
During a presidential debate, the candidates were asked to raise their hands if they favored legalizing divorce.
Roxas, including other candidates former Vice President Jejomar Binay, Senator Grace Poe and now President Rodrigo Duterte, did not raise their hands during the brief segment.
Roxas is among the senatorial slate of the coalition of opposition parties Otso Diretso for the upcoming May elections.
The senatorial hopeful is set to attend an event in his home province Roxas City, Capiz on Tuesday as the official campaign period kicks off. /jpv
