LOOK: Opposition bets start face-to-face campaign in Caloocan

MANILA, Philippines — Candidates from the opposition coalition Otso Diretso made their rounds in Caloocan City on Tuesday, the official start of the campaign period for the 2019 midterm elections.

After the press conference, the senatorial bets visited houses, shops, and markets at the heart of Caloocan City.

Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano and former Solicitor General Florin Hilbay, in particular, discussed the upcoming elections with people inside a barbershop along 10th Avenue.

Caloocan 2nd District Rep. Edgar Erice accompanied former Deputy Speaker Erin Tañada inside the Poblacion Market, as Maranao civic leader Samira Gutoc and veteran election lawyer Romulo Macalintal visited houses near the San Roque Cathedral.

Senator Bam Aquino and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, on the other hand, talked to Otso Diretso volunteers and Caloocan residents who attested to the positive effects of Aquino’s legislation.

A concelebrated Mass to be led by Bishop Emeritus Deogracias Iñiguez will be held later at around 6:00 p.m. at the Cathedral, which will be attended by the candidates and Vice President Leni Robredo.

The Otso Diretso is a coalition of opposition political parties, including LP, Magdalo, Aksyon Demokratiko, and Akbayan party-list. /ee
