Pope Francis has named a Filipino-American priest auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese of Los Angeles (LA) in California.

Rev. Msgr. Alejandro D. Aclan, 68, will serve under Archbishop Jose Gomez, and will be joining LA auxiliary bishops Edward Clark, David O’Connell, Robert Barron, and Marc Trudeau.

Aclan becomes the second Filipino-American priest to be appointed in the same archdiocese. The first was Bishop Oscar Solis, who served as auxiliary bishop of Los Angeles from 2004 to 2017, until he got appointed as bishop of Salt Lake City in Utah.

Pasay City-born Aclan earned a medical technology degree from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and worked in the electronic data processing industry before immigrating to California in 1982 and entering priesthood.

He finished his ecclesiastical studies at the Saint John’s Seminary in Camarillo in 1988 and was ordained a priest for the LA archdiocese in 1993. After ordination, he immediately served as the deputy priest of the Saint Finbar parish in Burbank and of the Saint John of God parish in Norwalk and then parish priest of the Saint Madeleine parish in Pomona.

Prior his appointment, the newly-appointed prelate was also deputy vicar for the clergy from 2012 to 2015 and vicar for the clergy from 2015 to 2018. CATHERINE A. MODESTO
