DAVAO del Norte 2nd District Rep. Antonio Floirendo Jr. said on Monday that he was among those vying for the Speakership, along with former Speaker and Davao del Norte 1st District Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page “Serbisyo Una,” Floirendo confirmed that he had met with some “very important personalities” to talk about how the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte should be kept stable in his remaining years as chief executive.

Floirendo also called out Alvarez for his “dictatorial, vindictive, and divisive” leadership, which led to his ouster back in July 2018.

“Part of the 17th Congress under then House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez was far from the kind of Congress that everybody wanted,” Floirendo said.

He added that joining the Speakership race was not for his own political ambition but rather to help in ensuring that Duterte would get “solid support” from the House leadership in his last three years in office.

He also said that he wanted to correct a “big mistake” he committed when he “emphatically” endorsed Alvarez as Speaker.I

n 2018, Alvarez filed a graft complaint against Floirendo in the Office of the Ombudsman over the businessman’s allegedly questionable joint venture agreement through his Tagum Agricultural Development Company and the Bureau of Corrections.

This was done amid reports that Floirendo was plotting to oust Alvarez to pave the way for the Speakership of Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

As Arroyo steps down from office on June 30, pro-administration parties and groups also expressed support for the bids of former Foreign Affairs secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, former Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez, San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora, Cavite Reps. Alex Advincula and Abraham Tolentino, Malabon Rep. Ricky Sandoval, Leyte Rep. Lucy Torres, and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales. GLEE JALEA
