Foton and F2 Logistics shoot for a semifinal seat when they clash in the sudden-death quarterfinals of the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix today at the Filoil Flying V Centre.
Action kicks off at 7 p.m. with the Tornadoes looking to pull a massive upset to book a seat in the next round of this prestigious women’s club tourney backed by Asics, Mueller, Mikasa, Senoh, Team Rebel Sports, Bizooku, UCPB Gen, Cocolife, Hotel Sogo and Data Project.
After struggling with an 11-game losing streak, Foton was tipped to easily fold up in this battle that also has ESPN5 and 5Plus as broadcast partners.
But it didn’t happen as Jaja Santiago and import Courtney Felinski willed the Tornadoes to an earthshaking 27-25, 19-25, 25-22, 16-25, 15-12 win in their first quarterfinal battle to push the powerhouse Cargo Movers to the brink of a massive defeat.
Santiago, who just came from a long stint in the V.Premier League in Japan, delivered 20 points while Felinski also had 20 for the Tornadoes, who ended the double-round classification as seventh seed.
Head coach Aaron Velez said while the victory was truly overwhelming, the battle is still far from over.
“We’re really happy for the win, but we can’t be too excited,” he said, looking forward to bringing down the Cargo Movers to book a best-of-three semifinal duel against the survivor in the other quarterfinal battle between PLDT Home Fibr and Generika-Ayala.
On the other hand, F2 Logistics had a hard time against the Tornadoes due to lack of personnel.
In fact, star setter Kim Fajardo remains injured, prompting backup Alex Cabanos to play the entire two-hour match that obviously affected her decision-making down the stretch.
