THE Philippine National Police (PNP) is preparing a report against a certain “childish” mayor in Metro Manila for allegedly removing the police hotlines in his city after he was not informed that its chief of police has been assigned to another position, General Oscar Albayalde said on Tuesday morning.

Albayalde said the mayor, whom he did not identify “for sensitivity because it’s election time,” got angry over the incident.

He also revoked the gas allowance for the city’s patrol cars and the tickets for city ordinances, said Albayalde.

“This is all part of our crime prevention effort and crime solution effort so as a mayor, why would you remove [the hotline numbers] so I think it’s very unprofessional. That is very childish of him,” he said.

Albayalde directed Maj. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, Metro Manila regional director, to prepare a report so that he could endorse it to Interior Secretary Eduardo Año.

“[Secretary Año] will probably make him explain or show cause on why that is the case. He already did it before to some local chief executives in the Visayas,” he said.

“You cannot just simply remove the hotlines because that is in the local government code, especially [since] it’s part of peace and order,” Albayalde said.

He insisted that the PNP was not obligated to inform mayors about the removal of its officials in their areas.

Albayalde said that based on the law, mayors have the right to choose their preferred chief of police from a recommended list.

“What is written in the law is they have the right to choose from among the recommended that we will give them. I hope they don’t abuse this power,” he said. ROY NARRA
