THE Philippine National Police (PNP) placed Eastern Samar under full alert after it was struck with a magnitude 6.5 earthquake on Tuesday.

PNP Chief General Oscar Albayalde ordered Brig. Gen. Dionardo Carlos, Eastern Visayas regional director, to activate the Disaster Incident Management Task Group immediately.

Police in Eastern Visayas were also tasked to help its Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, local government units, and government agencies and civilian rescue groups.

Besides assuring the safety of civilians from the earthquake, police in affected areas were also expected to prevent any looting or disorder.

The PNP Engineering Service was also directed to inspect all police station buildings and other camp facilities in the region to determine their structural integrity, safety, and fitness for use by PNP personnel and the public availing of police services.

The Eastern Samar earthquake occurred less than 24 hours after Luzon was struck with a magnitude 6.1 earthquake.

Based on the latest report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, 16 individuals died from Monday’s quake, with its epicenter in Castillejos, Zambales.

The fatalities were all from Pampanga. ROY NARRA
