Elorta tops Torre Cup

Third-ranked David Elorta topped the Open division of the Eugene Torre Cup rapid chess tournament Sunday held at the Mapua gym in Intramuros, Manila.

Elorta, who has an ELO rating of 2384, scored 8 points in the nine-round Swiss System event, a score matched by International Masters Ronald Dableo and Jan Emmanuel Garcia.

But Elorta won the tiebreak with Dableo and Garcia finishing second and third, respectively.

Sherwin Tiu and IM Ricky de Guzman finished fourth and fifth, respectively after posting 7.5 points apiece.

Grandmaster Joey Antonio, the top seed with an ELO of 2497, settled for sixth place with 7 points, a similar score posted by seven others.

The other 7-pointers were John Merill Jacutina, Jose Aquino Jr., Don Tyrone delos Santos, Christian Mark Daluz, Vince Angelo Medina and Melito Ocsan Jr.

The top 30 finishers earned spots to the semifinals of national tryouts for the Southeast Asian Games the country will be hosting in November.

In the Open blitz event, FIDE Master Narquingden Reyes won via tiebreak over FIDE Master Mari Joseph Turqueza and Jose Aquino Jr. who wound up second and third, respectively. All three finished the nine-round event with 6.5 points apiece.

In the high school division, Franchesca Largo came out on top of a three-man logjam for first place with 7.5 points each.

John Kenneth Gelua settled for second while Francis Roi Parro took third place.

In the elementary bracket, Oscar Joseph Cantela tallied 8 points to capture the crown, half-a-point ahead of Gladimir Chester Romero and Al-Basher Buto who finished second and third, respectively.
