MMDA to deploy 2,500 traffic personnel for opening of classes

MANILA, Philippines — The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will deploy 2,500 traffic personnel on June 3, Monday, for the opening of classes in Metro Manila.
MMDA chairman Danilo Lim said Friday that the personnel will be deployed before 5 a.m. on Monday and the succeeding days to ensure the smooth flow of traffic as schools open.
“We shall field traffic personnel in traffic-prone areas around the metropolis and monitor traffic situation on roads leading to schools so we can easily augment personnel when needed,” Lim said in a statement.
District traffic heads were also reminded to coordinate with school authorities, barangays, and local traffic officials to discuss how to manage traffic near schools.
“We have coordination with some school administrators to allow picking up and dropping off of students inside school premises so as not to obstruct vehicular flow on school zones,” MMDA Traffic Discipline Office chief Teroy Taguinod said in the same statement.
Traffic congestion is expected during school days within the vicinity of schools. This causes a spillover of vehicles along Edsa and other major roads in Metro Manila, the MMDA said.
The MMDA is part of the Department of Education’s inter-agency task force for this year’s “Oplan Balik-Eskwela.”
The agency participated in cleaning up schools, teaching school authorities and students about disaster-preparedness, and re-painting faded pedestrian lanes in some schools. (Editor: Eden Estopace)
