THE Land Transportation Office (LTO) has revoked the license of a man after he was shown on video driving from the right side of his car where there was no steering wheel as all vehicles in the Philippines were driven from the left side.

In a statement on Facebook on Thursday, the Department of Transportation (DoTr) said the LTO issued a memorandum, which also charged Luis Miguel “Miko” Lopez “with multiple violations such as speeding, reckless driving, failure to wear or use a seatbelt, and driving a motor vehicle without a steering wheel or Unauthorized Motor Vehicle Modification.”

“Aside from the revocation of his driver’s license, Lopez is required to pay penalties for the said multiple violations ranging from P1,000 to P5,000,” the DoTr said.

“In a video circulated on social media sites, Lopez was seen performing dangerous stunts such as driving a motor vehicle from the front passenger seat,” the DoTr said.

“He was seen using his left leg to operate the gas and brake pedals while using his left hand to maneuver the steering wheel. As he was doing these acts, Lopez, in an act of arrogance, even lit a cigarette and smoked,” it said.

The Transportation department also pointed out that Lopez posted photos of him driving at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) without using the steering wheel and another driving at a highway at 200 km/h.

In a statement, Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said that Lopez was a “danger to the public.”

“Driving on public roads is a privilege. Owning a license is a privilege,” Tugade said.

Tugade said that when roads are used, “we partake in the shared responsibility of road safety.”

Tugade said that what Lopez did was in “utter disregard for the safety of motorists and pedestrians” and he “poses a danger to the public and, therefore, has no place on our public roads.”

The Transportation department urged the public to report other drivers with similar tendencies as Lopez.

On May 29, the Transportation department posted the viral video of Lopez, from a certain Axel Fariñas. ARIC JOHN SY CUA
