PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte declared June 24, Monday, a special (non-working) holiday in Manila in commemoration of the capital city’s 448th Foundation Day.

Duterte made the declaration through Proclamation 731, signed on June 4 by Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea by authority of the President.

“It is but fitting that the people of the City of Manila be given full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” the proclamation read.

Manila was founded on June 24, 1571 by Spanish navigator and governor Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.

The labor department provided in its guidelines that those who would work during special non-working day should be paid an additional 30 percent of their daily rate on the first eight hours of work.

For every extra hour of work, employees should be paid an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate. CATHERINE S. VALENTE
