Students taking part in the first Tempo Inter-Schools Rapid Chess Championships presented by Manila Prince Hotel will get FIDE identification numbers, according to tournament director Grandmaster Jayson Gonzales.

Gonzales said the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), under the leadership of Rep. Prospero Pichay Jr., has waived ID fees until the end of the year to encourage more chess players to become members of the world’s governing body for chess.

“Once you get the FIDE ID, you are now eligible to play in international tournaments and gain ELO ratings,” said Gonzales.

The tournament, held to mark Tempo’s 37th anniversary, will be held on July 20 at the Manila Prince Hotel located at the corner of United Nations Avenue and San Marcelino Street in Manila.

Separate Open and women’s competitions will be held for college, high school and elementary students.

Some P100,000 in total prizes will be at stake in the one-day, seven-round Swiss System event sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

Aside from the individual events, trophies will also be awarded to the top performing schools in each division and the overall team champion.

The event is sponsored by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and supported by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), SM Supermalls, Mighty Sports Apparel and Accessories, International Container Services, Inc. and 1-Pacman Party-list.
