MALACANANG on Friday suspended government work and classes in Metro Manila due to heavy rain brought by the southwest monsoon or “habagat” and the trough of a low-pressure area.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea signed Memorandum Circular (MC) 63, declaring the suspension effective at 3 p.m on Friday.

“Upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, and in view of the continuing inclement weather, work in government offices and classes in public schools (public and private) at all levels in Metro Manila are hereby suspended effective 3:00 p.m. today, 2 August 2019,” Medialdea said in MC 63.

“However, those agencies whose functions involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations and render their necessary services,” he added.

Medialdea said the suspension of work for private companies, offices and schools was left to the discretion of their respective heads.

MC 63, which was released to the media past 2 p.m on Friday, takes effect immediately.
