18-year-old who strangled sister over Wi-Fi password sentenced to life

An 18-year-old man was found guilty of strangling his sister during an argument over the Wi-Fi password of their home in Georgia, United States.
Kevon Watkins was sentenced to life imprisonment last Friday, Aug. 2, as per a statement by the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office on the same day.
The incident took place on Feb. 2, 2018. It began when the then-16-year-old man got into a verbal argument with his mother over their home’s internet service.
Kevon had changed their Wi-Fi password so he could play games without being interrupted by other family members who wanted to use the internet. His sister, Alexus Breanna Watkins, got into a physical fight with him after worrying that Kevon might assault their mother.
The mother called the emergency hotline 911 after she failed to break up the fight. During the trial for Kevon’s case, an officer testified that the boy was still strangling Alexus when he arrived at the scene 10 minutes after the mother called for help. Meanwhile, further evidence showed that he held his sister in a chokehold for an estimated total of 15 minutes.
Authorities performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the girl after she was released from Kevon’s grip. Despite their attempts to save her, she was later declared dead at a hospital.
Kevon waived his right to a jury trial and chose to have a Bibb County judge decide his fate instead. Even though he did not intend to kill his sister, his actions resulted in her death. According to the statement, this constituted as a felony murder which Kevon was declared guilty of. JB
