Ex-Army reservist convicted for 2016 shooting of cyclist

MANILA, Philippines — The Manila City Regional Trial has found guilty a former army reservist for the death of a cyclist more than three years ago.

Vhon Martin Tanto has been sentenced to suffer imprisonment of up to 40 years and pay more than P1-million worth of damages to the family of cyclist Mark Vincent Garalde.

In a decision by Manila RTC Judge Albert Tenorio, Tanto is require to pay P1,048,109.63 for actual damages and P300, 000 for civil indemnity, moral and exemplary damages.

“All damages awarded shall be subject to the rate of six percent per annum from finality of this decision until its full satisfaction in line…,” the Manila Court said.

Garalde was killed in a road rage incident in Quiapo, Manila last July 25, 2016.

Garalde was shot four times at close range as seen on a CCTV footage that went viral in social media. /je
