Surrey RCMP is investigating after a video was posted to Reddit on Sunday showing a messy parking lot brawl.
The video was categorized under the local news tag and shared to the Vancouver subreddit sometime on Sunday, with the title “Just another day at strawberry hill theatre in Surrey …”
The 26-second clip features no audio and is filmed from behind a tree; it depicts a group of people pushing, hitting, kicking, and slapping one another in the driveway of a parking lot. The crowd is also seen breaking up into at least two smaller circles that appear to surround individuals.
Surrey RCMP is investigating after a video surfaced on Reddit of a parking lot brawl in the Strawberry Hill neighbourhood of Surrey. While police have not yet confirmed a date and time for when the fight broke out, the video was posted to Reddit sometime on Sunday, Aug. 11.
One fight, seen in the foreground of the video, shows at least three unidentified assailants surrounding a barefoot male in a blue T-shirt who is pushed down to the ground and stomped. Another individual can be seen jumping on top of him before he scrambles away.
Various individuals can be seen trying to intervene or insert themselves into the fray though it’s unclear how many were involved in total.
As of Monday morning, the thread sharing the video had collected 226 votes and 43 comments before being locked by moderators.
Surrey RCMP spokesman Const. Richard Wright said there were no calls over the weekend that matched the incident shown in the video, and that investigators were only made aware of the fight when contacted by Postmedia about the Reddit post.
Wright was not able to confirm a date or time for when the incident occurred and it remains unclear when the video was filmed.
“Now that we have seen it (the video), we are absolutely concerned regarding the behaviours as seen in this video and an investigation has been opened,” said Wright.
He confirmed the location depicted in the video is the parking lot at Cineplex Cinemas in the Strawberry Hill neighbourhood — an area he described as a “hot spot for front line officers” — and confirmed investigators are speaking with nearby businesses to determine what occurred.
Wright said investigators are now hoping witnesses or anyone who is able to identify the individuals involved will come forward and speak with police. Those with information about the fight caught on video contact reach investigators at 604-599-0502.
