Salvation Army Thrift Stores consider themselves recycling pioneers, and why not? They been at it long, long before reusing items instead of throwing them away took root in the public’s consciousness.

The Sally Ann reminds you of that as it kicks off its 2019 fall donations campaign, called Your Donation Matters: There’s Power in Giving.

“The organization has provided a unique way to serve through retail and recycling for over 100 years, and is proud to be one of Canada’s original and largest recyclers,” said Ted Troughton, managing director of the Salvation Army Thrift Stores’ Canadian recycling operations.

“This campaign speaks to why we should be top-of-mind for donations of clothing and household items. Your donations matter in providing care for our communities.”

The Salvation Army stores seek donations of “gently used” clothing and household items.

Simply put, donations are the lifeblood of everything a Salvation Army Thrift Store does, Troughton said.

“It’s the generous people and businesses that support our stores who enable us to help others,” he said. “Together, with all members of our shared communities, no matter who they are or what they’re able to give, we hand-in-hand make a difference.”

Money raised from donated clothes and goods fund food banks, school and camp programs, homeless shelters, and addiction programs.

Nationally, the Salvation Army provided the following figures for 2018:

Assistance was provided to over 1.6 million Canadians that may not otherwise have been reached.

Through the 106 Canadian Salvation Army Thrift Stores, 48,699 vouchers valued at over $6.2 million were given to families and individuals in need, who redeemed them for clothing and household goods.

Through its Thrift Stores, 37,404 metric tons (82.4 million pounds) of clothing, textiles, household items and furniture were diverted from Canadian landfills.

Monday, with fall and winter weather on the horizon, marks the launch of the Thrifts Stores’ eight-week donations campaign.

Donations are accepted seven days a week at Thrift Store donor centres. Locations and a list of acceptable donations are available at thriftstore.ca/donate-today.
