Pro-China folks clash with Hong Kong supporters in Richmond

Supporters of the Chinese government clashed Tuesday with Hong Kong pro-democracy demonstrators at Aberdeen SkyTrain Station in Richmond.

A post on Twitter shows the Beijing supporters taking down a Lennon Wall put up by the pro-democracy group.

Lennon Walls have been set up around Hong Kong on wall, escalators, and bridges. They put up yellow sticky notes and posters with with pro-democracy messages, anti-government slogans and various works of protest art, according to the South China Morning Post.

Richmond RCMP Cpl. Dennis Hwang said they were aware that a gathering of demonstrators would be happening Tuesday at Aberdeen Station in Richmond.

“We are acutely aware of current world events, especially those that correspond to the October 1st date. We do extensive planning for such events and balance the needs of peaceful protest with public safety,” said Hwang.

“We had officers stationed nearby and in plainclothes to monitor the situation.”

No one was arrested at the demonstration.

Hwang was not aware of any formal complaints to the RCMP of harassment from demonstrators.

Sgt. Clint Hampton of the Transit police also said they had not responded to any mischief or harassment complaints at Aberdeen Station Tuesday.
