The Emily Carr University of Art and Design will remain closed Monday and Tuesday as police investigate an act of arson.

According to a statement issued by the Vancouver school, a small fire was discovered on campus early Saturday morning but was fully extinguished and there were no injuries. It’s believed the fire was deliberately set by someone who broke into the school.

“While there is limited damage from the fire and the sprinkler system, we are grateful that it is not more extensive,” the statement read.

“The areas most impacted are the Research and Industry Office and Painting and Drawing studios on Level 4.”

While there is water damage in other areas of the building, very few personal effects or artworks were affected.

The school, located at 520 East 1st Ave., will remain closed Monday and Tuesday while restoration crews continue the mop-up and repair, and as Vancouver police continue their investigation.

“We would like to thank members of the Emily Carr community for their patience and understanding, and assure them that we are doing everything we can to return the university to full capacity,” the statement read.

School officials expect to issue an update Tuesday evening, though the hope is to reopen the school on Wednesday.
