A woman was seriously injured in Richmond early Monday afternoon, after her vehicle was struck by a stolen RCMP cruiser.

In a prepared statement, the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. — that has taken over the probe because it was officer-related and resulted in injury — said Richmond RCMP were called to a local hospital just after noon with a report that a patient who wasn’t permitted to leave the premises had fled on foot.

“A RCMP officer located the man but was unable to take him into custody before the man got into the police vehicle and drove away,” the statement read. “The man driving the stolen police vehicle collided with a civilian vehicle and an unmarked police vehicle near (Gilbert and Donald roads) before colliding with a second civilian vehicle in the 8200-block of Gilbert Road, where he was arrested.”

The driver of the second civilian vehicle, a woman, was transported to hospital with what are believed to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries. One RCMP officer was injured and is being treated for what are believed to be minor injuries.

The Richmond RCMP General Investigation Section and the Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstruction Service are continuing to investigate the theft and collisions. The area of Gilbert and Donald roads is currently cordoned off and inaccessible, motorists are asked to avoid the area.

The IIO stated it had “commenced an investigation to determine what role, if any, the officers’ actions or inaction may have played into the serious harm of the female.”
