The B.C. government says the temporary and extreme weather response shelters will be open Friday.

B.C. will open 1,355 temporary shelter spaces and more than 820 extreme weather response spaces, according to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

The number of extreme weather response spaces is up from 750 spaces last year, while the number of temporary spaces is down from 1,400. A ministry spokesperson said the number is down because about 45 spaces were made permanent.

Winter shelters supplement the 2,000 permanent, year-round emergency shelter spaces, and B.C. plans to increase the number of temporary and extreme weather spaces this winter, the spokesperson said.

Temporary shelters will be open every night for the winter season, while extreme weather response shelters will be available from Nov. 1 until March 31 to open during times of a weather alert.

Individual communities establish a plan of the weather conditions that warrant an extreme weather alert and determine the number of spaces to activate on a given night, depending on the capacity of existing shelters and the estimated need, the ministry said.
