An opera house in Hong Kong and an art gallery in North Vancouver are among the winners of B.C.’s 2019 architectural awards.

The top architectural award is the Lieutenant Governor of B.C. Award in Architecture Medal. Two buildings were singled out for the medal by the Architecture Foundation of B.C.:

• The Xiqu Centre is the new home for traditional Chinese opera in Hong Kong. Designed by Bing Thom Architects Inc. (now Revery Architecture Inc.) and Ronald Lu & Partners Ltd., the centre has a floating 1,100-seat main theatre that creates an atrium space and interior plaza for the public.

• Polygon Gallery, located at the foot of Lonsdale in North Van, is by Patkau Architects Inc. The gallery, part of a new waterfront area, has a distinctive sawtooth roof that recalls industrial buildings and a cladding of metal grating over polished stainless steel.

The awards were presented Monday in Vancouver.
