‘Quiel’ intensifies into a typhoon — Pagasa

“QUIEL” intensified into a typhoon as it lingered over the West Philippine Sea on Friday afternoon, the state-run weather bureau said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) last spotted Quiel at 430 kilometers west of Coron, Palawan.
It gained strength, carrying maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph. It was moving southwest at 10 kph.
Pagasa weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said Quiel would not make landfall and may leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) later on Friday or on Saturday morning.
For the next 24 hours, Quiel is expected to bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over Mindoro Provinces and Palawan. Moderate with occasional heavy rains will prevail over Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Apayao, and Ilocos Norte due to the tail end of a cold front. Metro Manila and the rest of the country are expected to experience localized thunderstorms.
Gale warning remained up in Batanes, Calayan and Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Isabela, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, the western coast of Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, and Palawan. Small boats are advised against venturing out into these seas.
