The National Circus School came to Vancouver’s Circus West on Saturday to recruit youths in a pre-selection tour that features dates in cities across Canada.

Flexibility appears to be the operative term.

The pre-selection is an audition process for nine to 17-year-old dancers, gymnasts or acrobats who happen to have a passion for circus performance.

A few dozen youths showed up Saturday to undertake a series of exercises that demonstrate spatial orientation, coordination, flexibility, strength and stage presence. Participants also learn about training programs and what a career in the circus looks like. Successful candidates are then granted a pass for the school’s intensive summer camps or an official audition, which takes place in Paris in January, and in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver in February.
