A Richmond-based, family-owned paper bag company has been tapped to help all 197 B.C. Liquor Stores phase out plastic bags, beginning this month.

On Thursday, Attorney General David Eby announced Bulldog Bag Ltd. had been selected to provide paper bags to B.C.-run liquor stores, as they ditch plastic bags from its stores across the province. BCL locations sell about $3.5 billion worth of liquor each year, resulting in some 22 million plastic bags being handed out.

Vancouver Island stores will be swapped over to paper bags beginning this month, with Metro Vancouver stores set to transition in February 2020 and the rest of the province by March 2020.

There is a charge per paper bag in an effort to encourage shoppers to bring reusable bags, however, one free reusable bag will be given to each customer for a limited time as part of the transition.

The bags produced by Bulldog will contain a minimum of 40 per cent recycled materials and are entirely compostable. They are sturdy enough to hold six bottles of wine or a six-pack of beer and two bottles of wine
