A Vancouver police officer has been charged with sexual assault, Mounties in Squamish said Friday.

Jagraj Roger Berar, 51, has been charged following an investigation into an incident that occurred in Whistler this summer.

Squamish RCMP said they first received a complaint on July 19, a few days after the alleged assault took place.

Over the course of the investigation, it was learned that the subject of the complaint was a serving member of the VPD, though Mounties do not believe the allegation is related to Berar’s job as a police officer.

Few additional details about the allegation have been provided, but Mounties said in a news release that the victim and the alleged assailant knew each other, and the incident is believed to be an isolated one.

No further comment is expected, as the matter is before the courts.
