‘Tisoy’ leaves P1.93B damage to crops, in production losses

TYPHOON “Tisoy” left P1.93 billion in production losses and damage to agriculture, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Thursday.

In its 8th bulletin, the DA said 106,525 metric tons (MT) of rice, corn, high value crops, and livestock over 47,639 hectares and agricultural facilities in Calabarzon, Bicol, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, and Western Visayas were destroyed by the typhoon.

Calabarzon is Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon. Mimaropa is Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan.

A total of 20,830 farmers and fisherfolk were also affected.

“Interventions are ready for distribution to affected farmers and fisherfolk in [the] Bicol Region amounting to P181 million for rice, corn, high value crops, livestock, credit fund, relief goods, fishing paraphernalia, allocation for dry season planting and coconut seedlings,” DA said.

The agency said that its regional field offices in affected areas have 76,060 bags of rice seeds, 14,672 bags of corn seeds and 322 bags of high value crops seeds for distribution to affected farmers.

Agriculture Secretary William Dar had said that the DA has a P250 million under its Quick Response Fund (QRF) that could be used for rehabilitation of the damaged areas.

The DA’s Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC) also prepared P65 million under the Survival Recovery (SURE) Program.

The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) also has available funds to pay for the losses incurred and will fast track processing of crop insurances of farmers that will be affected by the typhoon. EIREENE JAIREE GOMEZ
