OLYMPIC-bound Ernest John Obiena claimed his first Southeast Asian Games gold medal in fashion by setting a new record in the men’s pole vault competition on Saturday at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.

Obiena tried to clear 5.55-meter thrice but failed. Thus, setting a new SEAG record of 5.45m.

He erased the 5.35m record of Porranot Purahon of Thailand made two years ago in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The 24-year old Obiena is the first Filipino to qualify to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after clearing 5.81 meters in a qualifying tournament in Italy in September. JEAN RUSSEL V. DAVID
