White Rock city council will be at the city’s iconic peer Sunday to mark a year since its destruction during a devastating storm.

Mayor Darryl Walker and his peers have invited citizens to meet with them from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the pier, where everyone is welcome to share stories about the iconic structure and have free hot chocolate.

Some 30 metres of pier was destroyed on Dec. 20, 2018, during a storm that saw winds of up to 100 km/h lash the region. Boats were sent crashing into the pier, splitting the span in two and stranding one person at the far end.

The peer, built in 1914, reopened Aug. 27 after months of repairs with an official reopening ceremony held on Sept. 21.

The damaged section cost $4 million to repair, while another $11 million was needed for upgrades to the rest of the pier so it can withstand future storms. It is the longest pier in Canada.

Visitors to Sunday’s event can also view the White Rock Festival of Lights, which runs from 4:30 to 10 p.m. and is focused around the Museum and Memorial Plaza near the pier.

The festival runs daily until Jan. 5.
