Police in West Vancouver are investigating a fatal car accident early Saturday morning that claimed the life of a North Vancouver high school student.

The crash occurred around 4 a.m. in the 6300 block of Marine Drive near the Gleneagles golf course.

The driver, a 17-year-old male, died at the scene. A 19-year-old female passenger was taken to hospital.

The North Vancouver School District confirmed Saturday afternoon that the victim was a Grade 12 student at Argyle Secondary School. Parents in the community were also notified of the crash in a letter from the school’s principal, according to multiple reports.

West Vancouver police, along with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service, were on scene Saturday morning to determine what caused the crash. Speed is believed to be a factor.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the accident, has dashcam footage, or can provide any other pertinent information is asked to call West Vancouver police.
