A small earthquake hit Graham Island in Haida Gwaii late Monday night.

The 4.0-magnitude quake hit shortly before 10 p.m. It was felt in Skidegate, which is located on the southeast coast of Graham Island, approximately 50 kilometres west of mainland B.C.

The quake had an epicentre 217.3 km southwest of Prince Rupert and 313.8 km southwest of Terrace, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

There were no reports of any damage, according to Natural Resources Canada.

Earthquakes of this size rarely cause any damage, and earthquakes in the Haida Gwaii archipelago are common. A moderate 4.7-magnitude quake hit about 50 kilometres south of the Village of Queen Charlotte in November, and a 6.2-magnitude quake shook the region in July.

The last earthquake in B.C was recorded at 4.8 offshore of Vancouver Island. There was no damage, and no tsunami.

Two earthquakes struck an area off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island on Christmas Day, which followed a string of nine quakes to hit the region in a less than a week.

The first quake measured 3.6 was centred in the Pacific Ocean about 150 kilometres west of Port Alice. The second measured 4.9 and struck west of Port Hardy. The depth of the both earthquakes was 10 kilometres, which is considered shallow.
