Canada has rolled out the welcome mat for the people of Ukraine to help them find safe haven.  From providing travel funds and transitional financial assistance to English language training and helping families with children and job seekers, the country is offering the necessary support to help them adjust to their new lives in Canada.

There’s nothing like learning a few phrases in the Ukrainian language to make them feel more welcome, whether is wishing them good morning in their own language or asking if they would like some water or food.

Google Translate is an incredible tool to help with finding these words and phrases as you communicate, from saying an informal hello (pryvit) or a more formal good morning (dobroho ranku!).  You can also click on the audio button to help with the pronunciation! Remember that while this is a valuable resource, the translations can sometimes be awkward and cannot be used as a professional translator.

Language learning app and e-learning platform Preply has also put together a short guide of common Ukrainian words and phrases for those hosting people from words about transport, family and some basic questions and phrases. Interested in learning to say food, water, medicine kit or other important basic words? Find the list here.

You can also find a list of common words and phrases from ‘do you need anything’ to ‘how can I help you’ on the language-learning app Babbel. The platform is also offering courses, some with free access codes, to help Ukrainians learn languages as they transition to their host countries.
