The arrival of the holiday season means spending time with family and friends. But it’s also the perfect time to focus on gratitude and giving. Here are some simple ideas on how to spread some joy, which can also elevate your own mood!

Donate excess materials

This is a great time to declutter and see if there are things that can use a second life and donate the extra stuff to those who can benefit from them.  The stuff you do not need might be exactly what others are looking for.  Recycling, reducing and reusing of excess stuff can also go a long way in saving the environment.

Give the gift of life

Consider donations of blood and plasma or other donor programs.  Research and check the different guidelines and policies for different donor qualifications and policies.  As this is important decision, do take the time to carefully consider and discuss with trusted families or friends and related medical professionals.

Donate your time and skills

Volunteering is a great way to give back and make a world of difference without huge financial burden.  Whether it is preparing and serving food at community kitchen, teaching seniors computer skills, fostering a pet, or participating in baby cuddler program in the hospital, there are many volunteer opportunities that fits your skill and talent, time schedule and interest.

Make a financial contribution

Many charities need financial support. Do take the time to research and ensure you are donating to the right charity of your choice and avoid charity scams. See if the donations qualify for the charitable tax credits and if they can issue official donation receipts.  Find creative ways to raise money for charity and encourage family and friends to donate to the charity in lieu of exchanging gifts.

Select gifts that people need

Take the time to research and personalize gifts that the recipients will need and appreciate.  Instead of more toys or other ‘stuff’, consider gifting of experiences, such as sport or art classes for children, a home cook meal, or cleaning services.  It is the thoughts that count. There are many ways to find special and meaningful gifts. All it takes is paying attention to those close to you and your community to see who needs extra care and attention.

Share your joy and gratitude

Make it a family affair to share what we have with others and teach children the true meaning of the holiday season.  Show gratitude and appreciation for those who do so much for us, including our family and friends, pets, neighbours, mail/delivery worker, school bus drivers, or teachers. Find out how other communities celebrate the holiday season and share your traditions with others.

Simple acts of kindness may not require much effort, but they do make a world of difference for the receiver and the giver. However you choose to celebrate the season, try to shop local, support small businesses and minimize gift wrapping waste.
