MANILA, Philippines — Two tropical cyclones outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) continue to enhance the southwest monsoon, bringing moderate to heavy rains over parts of Luzon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
As of 3 p.m. yesterday, Tropical Storm Co-may was spotted 985 kilometers northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, while Typhoon Krosa was located 2,455 kilometers east-northeast of the same area.
PAGASA said both weather systems are unlikely to enter the PAR but continue to influence the prevailing southwest monsoon.
The enhanced monsoon is expected to bring occasional rains to the Ilocos Region, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Zambales, Bataan, Benguet and parts of Mimaropa. In Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Oriental and Occidental Mindoro and Marinduque, moderate to heavy rains may persist.
A weather advisory issued at 5 p.m. yesterday warned of 100 to 200 millimeters of rainfall in Benguet, which may trigger widespread flooding in low-lying areas and near rivers.
Rainfall ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters is also forecast in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Apayao, Abra, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales and Bataan. From Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon, 50 to 100 millimeters of rain remain likely in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra, Benguet and La Union.
PAGASA advised residents to stay alert for possible hazards associated with continuous rains, including flash floods and landslides.
Fair weather with localized thunderstorms is expected in the Bicol Region, the Visayas and Mindanao, as no significant weather systems are currently affecting those areas.
A gale warning remains in effect for the coastal waters of Batanes, Babuyan Islands and the northern coast of Ilocos Norte due to rough sea conditions. PAGASA advised against sea travel in these areas.
In Metro Manila, rainy weather is forecast to persist until Wednesday, with improved conditions expected by Thursday. Meanwhile, continuous rain is expected in Baguio City and much of Northern Luzon through Friday. — Ramon Efren Lazaro
