Death toll in Luzon quake up to 18 — NDRRMC

THE death toll in Luzon following a strong earthquake increased to 18, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Friday.
Ricardo Jalad, NDRRMC executive director, said 282 people were also injured while seven others remained missing following the 6.1-magnitude earthquake that had its epicenter in Castillejos, Zambales on Monday afternoon.
The fatalities all came from Central Luzon, majority from Pampanga.
The NDRRMC said that “no signs of life” had been detected but added that it was not giving up its search for more survivors.
Jalad said that officials agreed to continue the search, rescue and retrieval operations, which may last from two days to a week.
The search and rescue teams came from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, Philippine Coast Guard and local government units of the affected areas.
In its situational report, the NDRRMC recorded a total of 3,205 families or 14,901 persons in 13 cities and municipalities in Central Luzon who were affected by the quake.
The NDRRMC also said that a total of 909 families or 3,381 persons and 951 families or 4,756 persons were inside and outside the evacuation centers.
Jalad also said the NDRRMC has documented a total of 1,230 houses damaged by the tremor, of which 156 were totally damaged while 1,074 were partially damaged in the provinces of Bataan and Pampanga.
In Central Luzon and Metro Manila, P505 million worth of schools, roads and bridges in the quake-hit areas were damaged. DEMPSEY REYES
