Flight delays expected after red lightning alert raised at Naia

MANILA, Philippines — Several flights at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) are expected to be delayed after a red lightning alert was raised on Sunday afternoon.
The red lightning alert was raised around 3:43 p.m. but was immediately lowered to yellow lightning alert 20 minutes later.
“The red lightning alert is a safety measure taken to prevent any untoward incident from happening when lightnings are prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger personnel, passenger, and even flight operations,” the Manila International Airport Authority (Miaa) said in a statement.
“The MIAA seeks the understanding of the air riding public for expected delays in flight operations. Safety of passengers, flight and airport workers remain paramount in airport operations,” it added.
It was the second time red lightning alert was raised at the airport on Sunday.
Red lightning alert was earlier raised around 2:24 p.m. It was lowered to yellow lightning alert at 3:11 p.m.
“During the Yellow lightning alert, operations at the ramp has resumed except for aircraft refueling and catering service. Towing of aircraft is put-off if same has not commenced,” Miaa said. (Editor: Julie Espinosa)
