THE Philippine Red Cross (PRC) started distributing face masks to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) en route to Hong Kong on Friday, February 21.This began after Manila lifted the travel ban on Chinese territories that was a response to the coronavirus disease (Covid-19)outbreak. The PRC was able to give face masks to almost 700 passengers headed for Hong Kong.

Due to the shortage of face masks, the Red Cross encourages the public to only wear face masks if they have cough and colds, if they are taking care of those who are sick with cough and colds and if they are medical personnel such as doctors and nurses, who are exposed to sick people.

Aside from wearing face masks, the PRC promotes proper hygiene and frequent hand washing as another way of reducing the risk of contracting the disease.

“Our OFWs are taking risks going back to their jobs amid this health emergency. They need to work for their families, and the Red Cross wants to make sure that they are given face masks for protection and to reduce their exposure to risks,” says PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sen. Richard Gordon.
