“Sparks Camp” Season 4 campers get honest about their red and green flags

The camp has officially been opened! 

On September 16, the fourth season of “Sparks Camp” had its world premiere on iWant! Avid fans of the first-ever queer dating reality show in the country finally met the first eight campers who will be part of the latest batch: Tommy, Ian, EJ, Taku, Beej, Jury, Michael, and Joaquin. Meanwhile, the remaining two—Gio and Howie—are going to be introduced in the next episode, completing the cast for Season 4. 

But before we get to know them further, witness their individual and collective journeys, and see the sparks, friendships, and possible romances that will unfold inside the camp, the campers gave us a glimpse of their personalities by opening up about their red and green flags during their respective panel interviews. 

“Sparks Camp” director Theodore Boborol shared clips from the interviews in one of his recent vlogs, where he also gave us a peek into the preparations and behind-the-scenes happenings before the cameras officially started rolling. 

For Beej, he considers himself a green flag for being appreciative, as he makes it a point to say “thank you” for even the little things people do for him. However, according to his friends, his red flag is his tendency to remain friends with his ex-dates, which can sometimes become an issue when he starts seeing someone new.  

Tommy, meanwhile, proudly considers his honesty and genuineness among his biggest green flags—although he looks like someone who plays games. In spite of this, he admits finding it difficult sometimes to communicate what he feels when he gets defensive. Still, the “High Street” actor acknowledges this and remains open to learning and growing as a person. 

EJ believes his green flag lies in his willingness to genuinely get to know the person he likes. However, potential matches might have to be patient when it comes to his replies, as he confesses about being a slow replier. He explains that he tends to get caught up with his busy schedule, with some instances when he wouldn’t respond for an entire day. 

Despite being cheated on by his exes, Taku takes pride on his capacity to continue giving love, which he regards as his major green flag. On the flip side, the Filipino-Japanese charmer reveals that he isn’t particularly verbal when it comes to expressing what he feels and thinks. 

Joaquin, on the other hand, puts a premium on communication. He says he will always do his best to communicate with others in a way they can understand, making this one of his biggest green flags. However, he becomes a red flag when it comes to letting someone into his life because aside from not being the type to easily open up, there are also plenty of walls to get through before he can truly decide whether he wants someone to become part of his world. 

Gio takes a more self-aware approach to the question by ‘fessing up that he used to be a red flag, although he’s still not entirely sure whether he has already become a green flag. But what he’s certain of is that he’s willing to work on himself and become one for the person he eventually ends up with. 

Jury  considers his ability to acknowledge his mistakes—and use them as opportunities to improve—as one of his biggest green flags. But when it comes to his red flag, Jury admits that he doesn’t usually express how he feels, which could make it challenging for someone trying to figure out what’s going on inside his head. 

Michael admits that he tends to have strong opinions about himself, which sometimes makes him a red flag. However, he proclaims himself a green flag for being an “avid advocate of communication,” who believes that issues can be resolved through proper and honest conversation, especially when both people are willing to talk things through. 

And lastly, Howie, who sees his being fun to be around and caring as his biggest green flags. But as a Gemini, he also knows that he can be, in his own words, quite chaotic—a red flag that could certainly keep things interesting inside the “Sparks Camp” villa. 

In the pilot episode of “Sparks Camp” Season 4, the first eight campers—Tommy, Ian, Taku, Michael, EJ, Joaquin, Beej, and Jury—were introduced one by one as they entered the villa. We also witnessed them having fun and getting competitive as they played their first-ever game, “Agawan Buko,” which EJ dominated, as well as having their first interactions and conversations with each other. Their funny, silly, and even embarrassing dating secrets were got exposed as well in this season’s first-ever “Moment of Truth.” 

While they had yet to fully get to know one another—and were still waiting for the arrival of the final two campers, Gio and Howie—they were already asked to take on their first “Sparks Giving.” In this segment, each of them had to give one “spark” chip to the specific camper who initially ignited the spark they were looking for without divulging their name but secretly dropping the chip to that camper’s basket.
