Netflix eyes ‘very broad theatrical release’ for ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ sequel

Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos revealed that the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is expected to receive a wide theatrical release.

“When the KPop Demon Hunters sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release,” the Netflix executive announced at Bloomberg’s Screentime as per report by Deadline.

During the event, the Netflix executive also discussed how the streaming giant determines whether a theatrical release is successful.

“It won’t be tied to the P&L itself, relatively low expectations that will add much to the financial outcome of the film itself,” he pointed out.

He added that Netflix is more likely to pursue a major theatrical rollout for titles with significant box-office potential.

“If you’re gonna say, pick a little risk to the Netflix performance, it should have the potential for a very big upside in the theater. So, for Narnia, for KPop Demon Hunters, that’s why they’re gonna get big, broad, global release. But I think in the other ones where it’s kind of in the middle, that’s where it gets tougher,” he stated.

Deadline previously reported that Netflix is targeting to release KPop Demon Hunters 2 in 2029.

Back on August 27, 2025, Netflix announced that KPop Demon Hunters had become its most-watched film of all time, recording 236 million views since its premiere on June 20, 2025.

The animated movie follows HUNTR/X, a K-pop trio balancing their lives as global superstars with their secret mission of battling demons. Their double life takes a dangerous turn when they come face-to-face with the Saja Boys, a rival boy group whose members are revealed to be demons.

KPop Demon Hunters features an all-star voice cast that includes Arden Cho, EJAE, Ahn Hyo-seop, Andrew Choi, May Hong, Audrey Nuna, Ji-young Yoo, Rei Ami, Joel Kim Booster, Kevin Woo, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, Lee Byung-hun, and Lea Salonga, among others.

Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the studio behind the hit Spider-Verse franchise, the film also became a major success on the music charts. “Golden,” one of the songs from its soundtrack, reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 dated August 16.

The movie went on to win Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden” at the 2026 Oscars.
