‘Crazy Rich Asians’ to return as HBO series with Constance Wu and Henry Golding reprising roles

Crazy Rich Asians is set to return as a television series on HBO.

According to a report by Variety, Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng, and Michelle Yeoh are among the original cast members returning for the upcoming series.

Executive producer and showrunner Adele Lim expressed her excitement about bringing the beloved characters back to the screen, this time through an eight-episode series.

“It’s a ‘Crazy Rich’ family reunion! This series is the sequel we’ve been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan’s brilliant books,” Adele said.

She also shared that she’s thrilled about reuniting with the original creative team to bring the series to life.

“Getting to work with the original creative team with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television has been a dream. Our writers room is humming and we can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with,” she stated.

Meanwhile, director Jon M. Chu reflected on how the success of the original film transformed his career and expressed his excitement about reuniting with the cast after eight years.

“Eight years ago, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ changed my life, and I got to make it with the most creative and hilarious group of people I’ve ever known. Since then, this cast has become movie stars, superheroes, arena-filling performers, and even an Oscar winner, so bringing everyone back together feels like coming home,” he remarked.

The director also acknowledged the film’s lasting impact on audiences and shared his excitement about finally delivering the long-awaited sequel.

“It’s been incredible watching audiences make this movie part of their lives, from mahjong nights to becoming the ultimate airplane movie, and I can’t wait to share what comes next. Finally, I get to answer the question I’ve been asked almost every day for eight years: ‘When are we getting the sequel?’ Well… bok bok bitch, we’re back.”

Production for the series is set to begin in 2027.

Adapted from Kevin Kwan’s novel of the same name, Crazy Rich Asians hit theaters in 2018. The movie earned more than $239 million at the global box office.
