DEFINITION: An abbreviation for hormone replacement therapy, a treatment that uses prescribed hormones to replace or supplement hormones the body no longer produces in sufficient amounts. It is commonly used to manage menopausal symptoms by replacing estrogen and, when appropriate, progesterone or other progestogens.

HRT is also common for transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive individuals who would like to go under a gender-affirming hormone therapy by using prescribed hormones to align their physical characteristics with their gender identity.

It is advisable to ask for your medical provider’s supervision and prescription when taking HRT. Unmonitored or self-prescribed “DIY” hormones may result in severe health risks.
