MANILA — Rey Remogat waxed red-hot as University of the Philippines made a statement against modern-day rival De La Salle University with a 80-76 victory in UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

The spitfire Remogat torched the defending champions with 20 points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc as the Fighting Maroons led by as much as 16 points to snap their two-game skid.

Veejay Pre also starred with 19 points, seven rebounds, two steals, and delivered a crucial basket in the final minute to keep the Fighting Maroons ahead down the stretch, while Elliot Dimaculangan contributed 11 points on 2-of-3 shooting from long range for State U, which notched its third win in five games.

Luis Pablo brought La Salle within a possession at 79-76 after completing an and-one with 16.6 seconds remaining, but UP held on to seal the victory.

JC Macalalag kept the Archers within striking distance whenever UP threatened to pull away, finishing with 15 points and a steal. Andrei Dungo added 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc, but their efforts were not enough to preserve La Salle’s two-game winning streak.

Pablo finished with 13 points, while Jacob Cortez was limited to 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting for the Green Archers, who absorbed their third loss in six outings.
